August: ZIT – Call Vienna Environment 2008

Fluidtime joins Vienna’s pioneers with the intermodal comparative route planner.
“Vienna Environment 2008” called on Viennese businesses to contribute to the protection of the city’s environment and to strengthen the Viennese economy in this field of activity. 1.5 million Euros in subsidies are provided by the city of Vienna for this purpose.

43 projects were submitted and evaluate by a jury team of 10. In the end, 14 projects were suggested – among them also Fluidtime’s innovative ideas. In cooperation with the environmental NGO GLOBAL 2000 we developed a comparative route planner system, which on user request suggests possible routes with different means of transport considering environmental factors. The aim is to promote the use of environmentally friendly transport through a simple user interface for web and mobiles. The cooperation with GLOBAL 2000 won special recognition by the jury as such a project underlines the central meaning of the transport sector to environmental protection in urban areas.

August: Web launch of “Research Strategy 2020”

Design - Content - Service

Fluidtime achieved yet another successful combination of design, layout, and content with the website www.forschungsstrategie.at launched for the Council for Research and Technology Development. The Council as advisory body of the Austrian government is legally assigned to draw up suggestions for political strategies on research, technology, and innovation. This obligation was met with the development of the Strategy 2020, also known as Excellence Strategy. The website enables users to access information clearly presented but with a fresh design. In order to provide smooth and stable accessibility, Fluidtime was also commissioned with the hosting of the site.

June: Adaptive Public Display Advertising – Thesis supervision

Fluidtime’s congratulations to Mr DI Patrick Lengauer!

The management of Fluidtime Data Services GmbH took on the supervision of another student’s thesis. DI (FH) Patrick Lengauer from the University of Applied Sciences Joanneum elaborated his paper on “Adaptive Public Display Advertising” with support of the “Fluidtime practice guide”.

The aim of the thesis was to design and programme a web application within another Fluidtime project “panMedia” which provides a dynamic and intelligent playlist for public displays. These are for example public TV screens supplying different target groups with information or advertisement. The idea was realised based on the Sony Ziris TM system, which was expanded to the adaptive display of adverts and was presented and successfully tested at the User Experience Night in May. We are happy that this thesis was completed in June 2008, whose exciting findings open prospects of innovative applications in various sectors.

June: PanMedia – Thesis supervision

Fluidtime’s congratulations to Mr DI Oliver Köhler!

During the last months, Dr. Dieter Meinhard and M.A. Michael Kieslinger supervised DI (FH) Oliver Köhler’s thesis on “panMedia – Interaction with Public Display”. The cooperation between Fluidtime and Oliver Köhler enabled a successful fusion of theoretical knowledge and practical know-how.

The aim of the thesis was to develop a concept and a prototype for an interactive picture gallery at public places. The special characteristic of this gallery is that users can easily contribute pictures or vote for them via mobile phones directly on the spot. Big events such as festivals are ideal areas for such dynamic galleries where many displays can be distributed to a young target group interested in technology. The thesis describes the concept of the programme architecture, the administration interface, and a prototype which was tested live during the User Experience Night in May. Oliver Köhler stayed with Fluidtime after the completion of the project, adding another expert to our team.

May: User Experience Night

Discover | Experience

Following this motto Fluidtime organised the legendary User Experience Night to the current Fluidtime projects for the fourth time this year in May.
The User Experience Night is a special form of usability and user experience event at which visitors can discover and experience new developments.
This year the User Experience Night was committed to “PAN – Personal Area Networks”. In this context several developments were presented: a prototype of a party picture sharing system for large screens, a tool for the administration of media content, software to control adaptive display of adverts, as well as the “Fluid-Box”, a Bluetooth multimedia server distributing media content to mobile phones. After checking out the new developments, the visitors came together in the kitchen, the social centre of Fluidtime, to share and discuss impressions and create possible new impulses. As expected, the night was a total success and our guests enjoyed the new projects. Remembering it as an exciting and interactive evening we hope to soon repeat the User Experience Night.
